Most homeowners expect concrete to stay exactly as it looked on the day it was poured. Then a few weeks later they notice a tiny crack or a small gap along the edge of the slab and wonder if something’s gone wrong.

After more than twenty years pouring driveways, patios and house slabs around Adelaide, we’ve learnt that concrete shrinking is simply part of the curing process. Every slab does it to some degree.

The trick is understanding the difference between normal movement and a genuine problem.

Concrete loses water as it cures

People often think concrete dries like paint.

It doesn’t.

Concrete hardens because of a chemical reaction between cement and water. At the same time, some of the moisture inside the slab gradually evaporates.

As that happens, the slab contracts ever so slightly.

You can’t stop it.

One thing we’ve noticed is that homeowners worry about shrinkage because they assume it means the concrete is getting weaker.

That’s not how it works.

A little shrinkage is expected. In fact, if you’ve never seen it happen, you’ve probably just never noticed it.

Those lines are there on purpose.

They’re called control joints, and they’re one of the smartest parts of the whole job.

After doing hundreds of driveways, we’ve learnt you can’t stop concrete from moving. What you can do is encourage it to crack in controlled, predictable locations instead of randomly across the surface.

Think of the joints as planned weak points.

They protect the rest of the slab.

Our climate likes to keep concreters on their toes.

A hot northerly blowing across fresh concrete in the middle of summer can pull moisture out of the surface much faster than a cool autumn day.

The funny thing is, people often blame the weather when they see shrinkage cracks.

The weather plays a part, but it isn’t usually the whole story.

Fast drying, poor curing or a slab that loses moisture too quickly can all make those small cracks more noticeable.

That’s why looking after fresh concrete during its first few days matters more than most people realise.

Not every crack is shrinkage

This is where experience makes a difference.

We’ve been called out to plenty of jobs where someone assumed shrinkage caused the problem.

Sometimes it had.

Sometimes it hadn’t.

If the ground underneath moves because of reactive clay soil, poor compaction or gum tree roots, the cracks tell a completely different story.

Almost every callback we’ve had started with movement below the slab rather than shrinkage inside it.

That’s why we always look at the bigger picture before jumping to conclusions.

Good construction keeps shrinkage under control

You can’t eliminate shrinkage.

What you can do is manage it properly.

A well-prepared base.

The right concrete mix.

Correct reinforcement where it’s needed.

Proper curing.

Well-placed control joints.

Those details don’t stop concrete from behaving like concrete.

They simply help it behave in a predictable way.

One thing we’ve noticed over the years is that homeowners rarely think about those steps because they’re hidden once the job’s finished.

They’re also the reason some driveways still look great twenty years later.

Don’t panic too early

Fresh concrete changes a lot during its first few weeks.

The colour changes.

The moisture changes.

The strength keeps increasing.

Tiny imperfections become easier to spot because you’re looking at something brand new.

That’s perfectly normal.
